VHM Welcomes New Executive Director
The Vashon Heritage Museum is delighted to announce the appointment of Gretta Stimson as its new Executive Director effective June 1st. With her deep roots in Washington State and a passion for storytelling through museums, Stimson brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to this pivotal role.
Stimson’s journey in the museum world began during her undergraduate years at the University of Hawaii, where she studied Anthropology. Her first museum internship ignited her love for the power of museums to connect communities and share impactful stories. She went on to earn her MA in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester in the U.K., further honing her expertise.
Over the past decade, Stimson has made significant contributions to the museum field. Her work with collections and historic properties at the Hayward Area Historical Society showcased her dedication to preserving cultural heritage. Most recently, she served as part of the team at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA, where she explored the intersection of technology and human history.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Stimson’s return to Washington State is a homecoming. Having grown up in Ballard and Shoreline, she understands the unique fabric of the Pacific Northwest. Now settled on Vashon Island, she is excited to raise her daughter in this vibrant community.
I am delighted to have Gretta onboard to steward the Museum as we continue to develop as a community resource for telling Vashon stories. She brings a set of skills and passion for history that is a perfect fit for the museum, and for Vashon, and our whole team is looking forward to working with her.
As Executive Director, Gretta Stimson aims to build upon the Vashon Heritage Museum's legacy. She envisions a museum that not only celebrates the island's rich history but also engages with contemporary issues, fostering dialogue and understanding. Her commitment to continued learning, exemplified by her leadership at Cultural Connections—a Bay Area non-profit for museum professionals—will undoubtedly shape the museum's trajectory.
"We have an opportunity to weave together the threads of our past, present, and future," says Stimson. "Museums are bridges that connect generations, and I'm honored to lead the Vashon Heritage Museum in this endeavor."
The Vashon Heritage Museum invites the community to join in welcoming Gretta Stimson as she embarks on this exciting chapter. Stay tuned for the new permanent exhibit opening this July and other programs and initiatives under her leadership.
